May 2011 - Olympic Torch Comes To Chelmsford

The Olympic flame will come to Chelmsford as part of the Olympic Torch Relay. The flame will travel to within one hour of 95% of the population in the UK during its 70 day relay.

The Olympic Torch Relay will start at Land's End on Saturday 19 May 2012. The Flame will then visit locations across the UK before reaching London on Saturday 21 July. The flame will stop in Chelmsford on Friday 6 July 2012 when the town will hold an evening celebration to mark the event.

May 2011 - Moulsham Street

Part of Moulsham Street, Chelmsford will be shut to traffic for six months as major improvement work begins in this popular town centre shopping area. Vehicles will be restricted from accessing the road between Parkway and New Writtle Street as Essex County Council and Chelmsford Borough Council commence work on improving access to cyclists and pedestrians.

Between May and November vehicles will be diverted and only pedestrians will have access to that part of Moulsham Street. The two public car parks will remain open and the existing on street parking on the rest of Moulsham Street will stay open.

On the opposite side of the town centre Chelmsford's multi-storey car park remains closed as Chelmsford Borough Council continue to carry out safety tests. The ailing 1970's built structure was closed in March 2011 when lumps of concrete fell into the market below. The car park requires remedial work before it can be re-opened.
